Wholesale Suit MOQs, Explained: How Minimum Order Quantities Work

If you're buying suits wholesale for the first time, three letters will shape every conversation you have with a supplier: MOQ — minimum order quantity. Get it right and your cash flow stays healthy. Get it wrong and you're sitting on sizes that don't move.

Here's how MOQs actually work in wholesale menswear, and how to plan around them.

What a MOQ is

A minimum order quantity is the smallest order a supplier will accept — per style, per color, per size, or per total order. It exists because cutting, sewing, packing, and shipping have fixed costs. Below a certain volume, the math doesn't work for either side.

MOQs aren't a penalty. They're the mechanism that lets wholesale pricing exist at all.

The common MOQ structures

Suppliers structure minimums in a few standard ways. You'll usually encounter one of these:

Per-style minimums. You must order at least X units of a given suit style, spread across its sizes and colors however you like. This is the most retailer-friendly structure — it lets you test a style without betting the store on one color.

Per-color or per-size minimums. Stricter: a minimum within each color, or a minimum run of each size. Common with made-to-order or import-direct programs.

Pack or ratio minimums. Suits sometimes ship in pre-packed size ratios (e.g. a pack covering 38–46). You buy the pack, not individual sizes. Simple to order, but you inherit the supplier's size curve — make sure it matches your customers.

Order-value minimums. A minimum dollar total per order rather than per unit. Flexible, and common for in-stock wholesale programs where the supplier already holds the inventory.

Always ask which structure a supplier uses before you compare prices. A lower unit price with a punishing per-color MOQ can cost you more than a slightly higher price with a flexible per-style minimum.

How to plan your first order

Start with proven sellers, not fashion risks. Black suits, navy suits, white dress shirts. These move year-round in every market. Exotic colors and bold patterns are for your third order, not your first.

Buy the size curve, not the size. In menswear, the middle sizes (40–44) outsell the extremes several times over. Weight your order toward the center of the curve. If a supplier offers size-curve guidance, take it — they've seen the sell-through data.

Leave room to reorder. The cheapest inventory is the inventory you don't have to discount. A smaller first order that sells through in weeks beats a big order that takes a season to clear — as long as your supplier actually restocks. Ask about restock reliability before you commit.

Do the landed math. Unit price is only the start. Add freight, duties, and any handling to get your landed cost per unit — that's the number your margin is built on.

MOQs and cash flow

For most independent retailers, the MOQ question is really a cash-flow question. Tie up too much in one style and you can't react when something else starts trending. The healthy pattern: modest opening orders across a tight assortment of proven styles, fast sell-through, then deeper reorders on what moves.

Suppliers with deep in-stock inventory make this pattern possible, because reordering doesn't mean waiting on a production cycle.

What to ask any supplier

Before your first order, get answers to these:

  1. What is the MOQ — per style, per color, or per order?
  2. Can I mix sizes and colors within the minimum?
  3. How fast do you restock best sellers?
  4. What is the landed cost per unit, not just the unit price?
  5. What are the payment and reorder terms?

A supplier who answers these clearly is a supplier you can build on.
